Teacher Training Held Heather Quinn and James (Joe) Medhurst (UK), facilitated a teacher training workshop in the Chandani village, Kavre. The training took place March 14th to 19th 2008 and was attended by teachers and student teachers. Topics covered included discussions of current practices and needs for the future, English building and vocabulary, number games and time telling, resource building, and assessment opportunities. One of the most significant parts of this workshop was the inclusion of visual aids to lessons presented to the children of the school. All visual aids were created using materials available locally. An example of this is making dice out of scraps of wood. The children could then use the dice to practice math skills such as addition, subtraction and multiplication. Another focus of this training was to have the school set up a library. In the model presented, the library would have a monitor – an older student – responsible for signing books in and out, and keeping order during open hours. KEEP often has positions available for qualified volunteers, especially English teachers. We have an URGENT NEED for experienced/ qualified volunteers to teach at small, understaffed government schools in remote areas. In addition to teaching English at a very basic level, volunteers could become involved in community work with the local people. These are challenging, remote placements that offer a unique opportunity for motivated people! Additionally, KEEP often needs qualified people to teach at the various courses it arranges for trekking staff and lodge owners. Please see the section on Volunteering for further details. |
