Community Development program
KEEP runs a program of activities which harness tourism to develop local communities in a positive way.
We have recently rolled out a number of projects at government schools throughout Nepal with the kind support of our partners, volunteers from around the world and the school management committees.
As well as providing much needed support to the schools the volunteers have the opportunity to learn about Nepali culture through staying with a host family.
Recent projects include:
Shree Maneshwari Primary School
December 2009 to January 2010
KEEP, in partnership with OzQuest, organised for volunteers from Australia to work at Shree Maneshwari Primary School, Phaidol, Lalitpur.
The volunteers helped with construction work on the school compound. The worked with students and teachers to link the front gate to the road with stone stairs, colour the school wall and paint the doors and window frames.
Shree Bindawasini Lower Secondary School
November 2009
Four American volunteers, including Christine T. Mackay, executive director and co-founder of Crooked Trails, took part in a project at Shree Bindawasini Lower Secondary School, Chandani, Kavre.
The volunteers were involved in building construction and helped renovate the school. Whilst working on the project Crooked Trails made an inspection of the school and put together a plan to expand the buildings to incorporate secondary level students. Permission for this expansion is now awaiting approval from the relevant authorities and we hope to proceed soon with this next phase.
